The Louis Riel Institute Archives and Special Collection is an emerging archive within a Red River Métis heritage organization. The collection is currently undergoing major professional processing, arranging, and documentation. This position offers a rare opportunity to work in a developing archive where systems, workflows, and policies are still being established-providing hands-on experience and meaningful contributions to foundational archival work.
Position Overview
The archive assistant will work closely with the Head Archivist to support the digitization of the LRIASC collection, and will assist with daily tasks and other small projects. This role offers comprehensive training in archival workflows, digitization, and preservation.
This position is ideal for those looking to gain substantial, real-world experience in archival practice, especially within an Indigenous cultural heritage context.
Key Responsibilities:
Digitization 50%
The main focus of this summer position will be to digitize the audio-visual collection.
Housing collection 25%
The summer staff will assist with housing and rehousing collection material into proper storage for preservation purposes, this will include placing documents in archival folders, making enclosures for rare books etc.
Other 25%
Summer staff will assist with other projects as needed such as, transcribing documents, assisting with cataloguing archival material, inventory of the collection etc.
Required Qualifications
• Ability to learn new software and digital tools quickly
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and willingness to follow procedures
• Strong communication skills
• Demonstrated interest in archives, museums, cultural heritage, or information management
Preferred Qualifications
• Formal educational training or hands-on-experience with archives.
• Experience handling archival materials, artifacts, or special collections
• Knowledge of Red River Métis history and culture, including lived experience
• Knowledge of Michif and/or French
Eligibility (Green Team Requirement)

• Being legally entitled to work in Canada
• Being between 15-29 years of age
